Mid-spring has settled over Melbourne Market with an explosion of warm-weather fruits, vibrant tropical arrivals and robust spring staples leading the floor. Traders at Victoria’s wholesale fruit, vegetable, and cut flower trading centre are reporting a shift toward tropical favorites, with northern mangoes and melons hitting full swing alongside premium citrus and avocados.
Tropical lines are generating major buzz this month as Kensington Pride mangoes from the Northern Territory arrive in high numbers, supported by abundant supplies of honeydew and rockmelons. Green mangoes are also in full swing across the market, offering a tart, crisp option for fresh spring salads and dishes.
Henry Huynh of CK Tropical highlights the current momentum across tropical and specialty fruits.
“All varieties of mangoes coming out of Queensland will start in about six weeks, as current supply is coming straight from the Northern Territory,” he says.
“Green mangoes are in full swing at the moment, and we’re seeing the very first of the new-season passionfruit and watermelons land on the trading floor. Looking ahead, local dragonfruit is also set to make its entrance come December.”
Specialty citrus varieties continue to shine as spring unfolds, with mandarin lovers in for a seasonal treat.
Paul Angelucci of V.F. Siciliano & Sons notes that specific mandarin cultivars are at their peak right now.
“Afourers are eating really well at the moment, coming in best at the start of spring,” he says.
In tropical staples, North Queensland papayas are steadily building momentum ahead of their peak summer window.
Varinder Sandhu of Total Fresh Produce reports that papaya quality is looking exceptionally bright.
“Rosie's Reds Papaya from North Queensland will come into peak around Christmas time, although they are still good to eat now,” he says.
“Cafes and restaurants I’ve seen have cut papayas vertically like a boat or bowl for breakfast. They are also good at home with a little bit of salt.”
Shoppers looking for rich, creamy staples will also find outstanding value in southern avocado supplies, with South Australian Hass avocados hitting prime eating this month.
